Die Tradition des Danziger Fischmarktes reicht zurück bis zum Jahre 1343 als er vom Grossmeister der Kreuzritter, Ludolf König gegründet wurde. Von Anfang an versorgte er die Danziger Bürger mit frischem Fisch und Meeres-
früchten. Einzige Bedingung war, dass die Kreuzritter das Privileg hatten, die besten Fische vor allen Anderen zu bekommen. Bald wurde der Fischmarkt von den Kaschuben dominiert – insbesondere den kaschubischen Frauen, deren
scharfe Zunge beim Klatsch gefürchtet war. Im laufe der Zeit erhielt der Fischmarkt durch die kaschubische Folklore einen speziellen Charakter.
