TURNING THE CORNER

THE U.S. AND THE U.K. APPEAR TO GAIN THE UPPER HAND WITH NEW TACTICS and EQUIPMENT; GERMAN U-BOAT LOSSES MOUNT AFTER HITLER WINS NAZI SPRING by Blitzkriegs in Poland and France.

Flying Boats of the R.A.F. were invaluable tools in the Battle of the Atlantic in flushing U-boats from the depths and in providing aid to stricken vessels and their crews as they are watched over before being picked up by a rescue boat.

The Sunderland had a normal range of 2,980 miles and could carry up to 2,000 lbs of bombs. It also bristled with defensive armament that earned it the respectful Luftwaffe nick name of ‘fliegende Stachelschwein’ ('Flying Porcupine’.) Later in the war, the Atlantic was successfully patrolled by aircraft carriers designed for escort duty.
