3.3 OFFICIAL MAIL

As well as handling overseas mail, the Polish Harbour Post Office in the Free City became responsible for the exchange of Polish official mail between Polish offices in Gdańsk and offices in Poland. This was done to avoid control by the Free City authorities.

Above: Earliest known official mail, sent through the Polish Harbour Post Office in Gdańsk. On 13 September 1922 the manager of the Polish Harbour Post Office Gdańsk 1 enquired from Post Office Tczew 1 whether an American parcel with an incomplete address had been delivered to the right person. Official seal of the Post Office, hand-written SPRAWA POCZTOWA (postał matter) and POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY N19. 1 GDAŃSK a cds 13.9.22.
Below: Letter sent from Polish Harbour Post Office Gdańsk 1 to the Post and Telegraph Management, foreign mail department, in Warszawa. The sender and recipient indicate that it concerned here official mail of the Post, which could have been sent free of charge. For reasons unknown, the Sprawa pocztowa (postal matter) handstamp, that was put on the cover to show it concerned official mail of the Post, was made invalid again. Because of this, the normal 15 groszy postage had to be paid. POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY No 1 GDAŃSK b cds 12.1.26. WARSZAWA 1 machine arrival datstamp 13.1.26 on the reverse. The only known letter with Port Gdańsk stamps used in the Polish Harbour Post Office.
