At the other end of the Langgasse where it broadens out into the Langemarkt is the Town Hall, the ,,Recht städtische Rathaus’. The architectural effect of the street here reaches its summit. Above the age-blackened walls its light and dainty tower soars boldly upwards some 82 metres. (The tower dates from 1486—92, the spire from 1559—60 and contains a carillon.) The summit is surmounted by a gilt banner bearer as a weather vane. The erection of the Town Hall was begun in 1379; the present building is the result of many renovations and alterations. The main entrance faces the Langgasse. Seen from the Langemarkt the Town Hall presents a beautiful Gothic facade with two small turrets.

The rooms of the Town Hall are elaborately furnished. The Summer or Privy Council Chamber known as the ,,Rote Saal” derives its name from the hand-shorn red velvet tapistry and demonstrates the influence of Venetian magnificence. The rich material used in its furnishing and the loving care shown in its decoration causes the whole to blend harmoniously together. The ceiling is entirely of carved and gilded wood work and painted panels. The massive stove is one of its chief ornaments, date 1593. Adjoining this room of the former Lord Mayors is the Winter Council Chamber with groined roof and pictures. On the opposite side of the hail is the White Hall or Common Council Chamber now used by the municipality. The pictures depict incidents of importance in Danzig’s history.

A grand double spiral staircase in the hall leads to the Lord Mayor’s study and reception rooms. They are panelled rooms with carved friezes, biblical pictures, magnificent tables with marble tops inlaid with ivory, ebony, brass, mother of pearl, and silver. Massive carved oak doors and a stove with a figure of justice.

In the Town Hall the powerful influence. wealth, and pride of citizenship of former ages are artistically expressed.
