Steffens Haus

Our cover shows the distinctive building at Lange— markt 41 as being three doors from the Artushof and sporting yellow awnings. Comparing the old photo with modern views, note the multiple panes in the newer windows. At one time, heavy taxes were imposed on houses with 3 windows across the front, and only the so—called patrician homes of the Uphagers and Steffens have such a front. Most houses were very deep for their width, due to the taxation problem. On the big photograph, note the intricate stone restoration work. On the right card, the peak statue is still missing.
