Letters to the Editor

I hove a large group of German catapult covers that some readers may purchase. Unfortunately, they don’t include Danzig. See you all in Chicago in November.

- Ronny van Waardhuizen
Brasschaat, Belgium

Thanks for the copies. One thing stands out in these covers: every one seems to have a different cachet! We picked this example because it was the only letter that we have seen that contains the gummed lable at the top. German postal lables are always interesting o interpret, and we asked daughter-in-law Julie to help. It reads:

The postman must sort the letters according to building sections and floors before delivery. So that the mail is delivered quicker in the future, please ask your sender to include in the address, the floor and section of the building (front building, wing or summer house) in which you live. - Post Office

Another interesting point is that several other covers were addressed to the same person, and no additional delivery information or lables were included.

In reference to Danzig Report No. 63, 1 checked on that 1,000 Mark Air Mail Essay, but Believe It or Not, there are none here on the Southwest edge of Lake Michigan. I didn’t know it existed, so now I will have to go find some. Looking forward to seeing you at CHICAGOPEX.

- Bud Hennig On the Lake

Wow! Thanks for the warning, Bud. Burt Miller is hereby notified that it’s not a good idea to bring all of the essays to Chicago. Some folks may be very interested.

In the 1987 Scott Stamp Atlas, a list of local or fake stamp issues included such winners as Cymnu, the Commonwealth of Dalziel, and the Exilregierung dci- Freien Stadt Danzig. Have you ever heard of this? Where can I buy some of these fake stamps? - Jason Manchester Columbus, Ohio

That’s a very good question - one for Dr. Bohne. However, the situation isn’t too surprising, since we had been contacted by the “Danzig Senate President in Exile” and asked to turn over any official documents that are available from the Free City era. This sounded innocent enough, until one of our members contacted the individual and was offered the complete Danzig archives for $5,000,000. Apparently, begging pays off, if they can find customers.
