FORGED TELEGRAMS - HOW THEY DID THEM

The Gang That Couldn’t Cut Straight - That’s what we called those amateurs within the Gdaisk philatelic world, who couldn’t wait to cheat those suckers who were saps enough to spend money with them. Apparently running out of the authentic material, they resorted to the criminal action (!) of cutting and modifying standard Danzig and Port Gdaiisk material to produce desirable items. Below is a classic example. In DR-87 (June 1995), Telegram Nr. 26, shown on page 3: “a square has been removed . .. .above the g. above the REC and below the 29, with another piece to fill the space, Ecovered byl a Telegram lable on . .back.”

It occured to some of us victims that there must exist the telegram from which this misc hief originated, and, sure ‘nuf, one of the suspects had Nr.70 for sale!!! Originally a legitim ate Gdynia telegram, it now sported a 17 mm-square cutout, now applied to Nr. 26.

FIGURE 1 - Host teleg ram Nr26 with REC handstamp modified. A lable was pasted over the back to cover up deceitful act by forger.

FIGURE 2- Donor tele grain Nr. 70, with 17-mm cutout. Buyers, be careful out there!
