THE LAST DAYS OF DANZIG
Keeping in mind that Malcolm Steward’s cinema reaction card was written on Mar. 9, Soviet Marshall Rokossowski’s leaflet of March 24, 1945, gave the occupants of the city an option to surrender, with a guarantee of safe passage, or else a continuous attack until capitulation. Hitler opted to defend Danzig to the death. lof the defenders]

Hardly a square meter was unaffected by Rokosowski’s bombardment, until the Germans gave up Danzig to the Soviets. Above is Linger Markt after the defeat at the end of March. At the left is a photo of how the market place looks today. The view is from the Green Gate, looking west, at the beautiful reconstruction. Srra Jienhahn tracks have been removed, as well as auto traffic.
