>> In memorium ... Gerhard Schuler 1911-1981

In 1948, son Christian was born. Christian was educated in agriculture and received his degree. He was later married to a charming young lady who bore Gerhard a grandson within a year.

Gerhard SchUler in 1948 entered into the employ of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in its building department. He advanced to the leader of the statistical examination and retired in 1976 as Building Director. Since he was a member of so many boards and societies, he made many trips throughout Germany.

How he took over the leadership of the Danzig Study Group in 1955, and his appointment as Bundesprüfer for Danzig, requiring much time and energy, was a mystery to some who didn’t know the long hours spent at his studies, often after midnight!  In 1964, the Schülers moved to a new home in Fruchtallee.

Hard-hearted fate tore from him in 1961 his wife Brunhild, and at the end of 1972, his second wife also died after 10 years of marriage.

And so goes our Gerhard Schüler on his way, straight and proud, but humble. His invaluable conscientiousness, paired with his friendly ways - comrade, friend and companion in one person - one of the last Cavaliers of the old school.

That was the man Gerhard SchUler. The description of the philatelist Gerhard Schüler would be a numbering of accomplishments which are known to us Danzig collectors. The philatelists gave him honors which really say nothing about him, the person.

We think of i.im in sadness and will remember him always, as he was: kind and obliging, true to the point and yet full of humor, learned and yet not a teacher . . . he was: Ein Mensch !

Ado, dear Gerhard Schüler !
