Nodern Gdañsk, although incorporated into the Eastern European Bloc, evn now, in the 1980’s, shows much of her old independent spirit by being the centre of an increasingly strong movement for the rights, and better working conditions of Polish workers. The outcome of this tense political struggle could once again encourage the strategic importance of Gdañsk’s position in the world, and revive her tradition of being a truly “ Free City.
