5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1 DOMESTIC MAIL – TRAFFIC BETWEEN DANZIG AND POLAND

A Polish mail delivery service was started in
part of the city of Danzig, delivering mail
received from Poland. According to an
agreement made between the Polish and the
Free City Post all mail from Poland with the
address shown as in Gdańsk (in Polish) would
be delivered by the Polish Post. Mail
addressed to Danzig or to other parts of the
city, like Langfuhr (Wrzeszcz) or Oliva
(Oliwa), was to be delivered by the Free City
Post.

restante from Gniezno to Gdańsk. The card
was not collected within the term (Nie podjęto
w terminie) and the card was sent back
(ZWROT) by the Polish Post on 27 June 1938.
Rare additional handstamps of the Polish Post
in Danzig and a Gniezno publicity datestamp.

8 March 1938. Letter from Gdynia to Gdańsk for which only 15 groszy was paid instead of 25. Therefore the
Gdynia Post Office applied a boxed “T” handstamp indicating that 20 groszy postage due had to be raised,
double the deficiency. The Polish Post in Danzig raised 20 groszy postage due with normal Polish postage due
stamps because no special postage due stamps had been issued for them. These stamps were, however, made
invalid with the rare boxed Unieważnione (invalid) handstamp because the addressee could not be found. The
letter was returned to Gdynia (ZWROT) where again 20 groszy postage due was raised, this time to be paid by
the sender.
