4 THE RAILWAY STATION POST OFFICE
4.3 THE HANDLING OF NORMAL MAIL
21 November 1937. Picture postcard sent
from Danzig to Bydgoszcz with a GDAŃSK
2a cds. The Post Office Gdańsk 2 applied the
very rare T-handstamp (underneath the
postage due stamp) with manuscript 10,
indicating that 10 groszy postage due (twice
the missing amount of 5 groszy) had to be
raised. The postal employee made a mistake:
For a picture postcard with a message up to 5
words (not including signatures) only 5
groszy had to be paid, for a message with
more than 5 words 15 groszy. In fact the card
is 5 groszy overfranked and not 5 groszy
underfranked. In spite of this 10 groszy
postage due was raised upon arrival in
Bydgoszcz the next day
On 1 September 1939 in the early
morning the Post Office Gdańsk No 2 at
the Danzig main railway station was
occupied by combined Danzig - German
armed forces.
31 August 1939. Polish postal stationary
card from the 1938 issue. POLSKI
URZĄD POCZTOWY GDAŃSK 2 b cds
31 August 1939, 8 o’clock in the
evening, the last day the Post Office
was open.
