5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1 DOMESTIC MAIL – TRAFFIC BETWEEN DANZIG AND POLAND

On 5 January 1925 in the centre of the city of Danzig the main Post Office POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWO-TELEGRAFICZNY GDAŃSK No 3
(Polish Post and Telegraph Office Gdańsk No 3) was opened for the public and started to handle private mail between Poland and Danzig. On the
same day eleven Polish postage stamps overprinted PORT GDAŃSK (Danzig Harbour) were issued for the Polish Post in Danzig. These stamps
were issued for use on correspondence to Poland only. Mail franked with these stamps could either be delivered at the Post Office or directly into one
of the ten letter-boxes that were placed in various positions around the city.

POLSKI URZĄD P.-T. No 3 GDAŃSK b registration handstamp. WARSZAWA 1 2 arrival cds 6 January 1925 on the reverse. 15 groszy for
the letter, 20 for registration and 50 for express. One of the first registered letters sent, bearing registration number 5.
