5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1 DOMESTIC MAIL – TRAFFIC BETWEEN DANZIG AND POLAND

The setting up of letter-boxes by the Polish
Post in Danzig led to confusion with those of
the Free City Post, despite their different
colours, inevitably resulting in instances of
mail being posted in the wrong letter-box. In
such cases the stamp was considered invalid
and the item was marked with a “T” (Taxe)
indicating that postage due had to be collected.
Mail with Free City stamps posted in Polish
letter-boxes is rare.

21 September 1925. Picture postcard with two
Free City stamps to Kraków posted in a Polish
letter-box. POLSKI URZ. P.-T. GDAŃSK No 3c
cds and a written “T” to indicate that postage
due should be raised but this was disregarded
in Poland.

7 August 1926. Picture postcard sent to Poznań with a
10 pfennig Free City stamp covering the Free City rate
for a postcard to Poland. The card was posted in a
Polish letter-box. POLSKI URZ. P.-T. GDAŃSK No 1
cds and a written “T” to indicate that postage due
should be raised. In Poznan 20 groszy postage due
was raised, twice the deficit.

3 June 1938. Postcard with a Free
City stamp posted in a Polish letterbox. Unusually the Free City stamp
was apparently not noticed and was
cancelled normally with the POLSKI
URZĄD POCZTOWY No 2
GDAŃSK cds of the Railway Station
Post Office. Arrival cds GDYNIA –
PORT POLSKI GDYNIA 1ł 4 June
1938. The only recorded item with a
Free City stamp forwarded by the
Polish Post in Danzig.
