5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1.2 DOMESTIC MAIL – POSTAL SERVICES
The official regulations of the Polish Post made a difference between postal services and financial services which were both part of the services
provided by a Post Office. Furthermore there were telegraph, telephone and radiophone services which were, in addition to the postal and financial
services, provided by a Post, Telegraph and Telephone Office. The main Polish Post Office in the Free City of Danzig was a Post, Telegraph and
Telephone Office, operating according to the regulations of the Post in Poland. In general, it offered the same services as post offices in Poland, with
a few exceptions for practical or political reasons, in the traffic between the Free City and Poland.
Postal services were divided in 5 groups: 1) letter mail, 2) insured mail, 3) parcels, 4) newspapers and magazines and 5) additional services. Each
type of these postal services included again several types of sendings.

Letter mail was a general term
which included several different
types of sendings: 1) letters, 2)
postcards, postal stationery cards
and postal stationery cards with
paid reply, 3) printed matter, flyers
and bulk mailings of printed matter
with and without address, 4) trade
papers, 5) samples and 6) mixed
sendings.
Letters are documents of on-going,
personal correspondence which
were sent in envelops or other types
of packaging to the person
mentioned in the address.

2 October 1936. Letter sent by the
British and Polish Trade Bank in
Danzig to Radom. The 25 groszy
postage was paid through an
imprint of the franking machine
the bank was using.

The use of Polish postal stationery
envelopes to send letters was
allowed as well. Looking at the
small number that is known, they
were probably not sold at the Polish
Post Office in Danzig but brought
in from Poland by individuals.

26 September 1937. Polish postal
stationery envelope from the June
1937 issue sent from Danzig to
Toruń with a POLSKI URZĄD
POCZTOWY GDAŃSK 2 b cds.
