GDANSK 1996
Gdansk was even more fun than before, with our meeting Giles and Pam du Boulay, Curt and Inga Hosny, Aleksy Nowaczynski, Malcom Steward, Donna Misiuda, Professor Januszajtis, Luc and Renata Vandewalle and Erwin Zwierzycki. Our wonderful hosts were Ewa and Hans Vogels, (at the right, at Inga and Curt’s great dinner) who took us to the “Dirschau Bridge”.(Story in next Report.)

Walking on our own, Betty and the editor explored the old buildings northeast of the Hevelius. One tall brick structure is now in use as a clinic, and a long, narrow building with the interior fluted columns is the headquarters of Sauer Neptune Gdansk S.A., a water supply company. The complex is listed as a Kaserne on our 1911 map.

A correction is necessary in regard to the original Rathaus. Although it was spared from destruction due to the Soviets’ plan to use it as a headquarters building after the fall of Danzig don’t look for the League of Nations offices in that building. The League’s offices were located in a separate building south of the Hauptbahnhof. Photos will have to wait until next year when the sun’s angles are more appropriate. Our new acquisition, the propaganda book DEUTSCHLAND UND DER KORRIDOR, (thanks to Erwin for the Polish negotiations), has a nice photo of British troops marching past that building in 1921. This also ties into the USS Pittsburgh’s visit, the relief mission, and many other events that took place after W.W. I.
