
2 THE HARBOUR POST OFFICE
2.1 THE EXCHANGE OF MAIL WITH OVERSEAS COUNTRIES
On 11 January 1922 the name of the Harbour Post Office was changed to POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY No 1 W GDAŃSKU (Polish Post Office No 1 in Danzig). It took until June 1922 for the new datestamps POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY No 1 GDAŃSK to be brought into use. Also new labels z Ameryki przez Polski Urząd Pocztowy No 1 w Gdańsku were introduced.
Three different series of labels were used: Without a code letter (rare), with code letter b (one copy recorded) and with code letter c. Special parcel cards were printed for the Polish Post in Danzig.
11 January 1923. Card for a 5 kg parcel sent to Nowy Sącz with the new label without code letter and a POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY No 1 GDAŃSK a cds. In Danzig 1200 marks for postage, transport from the ship and customs handling was raised. Single-line WOLNE OD CŁA and TARNÓW 2 2a cds 23 January 1923 of the Customs Post Office. NOWY SĄCZ 1 2c arrival cds 23 January 1923, the day the card arrived, NOWY SĄCZ 1 2b 24 January cds, the day the card was sent to the recipient and NOWY SĄCZ 1 4a cds 25 January 1923 cancelling 24 postage due stamps of 50 marks on the day the parcel was collected.
27 June 1922. Parcel card for a 5½ kg parcel from the USA sent to Wolanka. The only recorded copy of a z Ameryki przez Polski Urząd Pocztowy No 1 w Gdańsku b label and a POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWY No 1 GDAŃSK a cds. In Danzig, 400 marks for postage, 100 marks for transport from the ship and 25 marks customs handling was raised. TUSTANOWICE arrival cds 3 August 1922 on the reverse. Eleven Polish postage stamps with a local DOPŁATA TUSTANOWICE handstamp on the reverse.
