5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1.2 DOMESTIC MAIL – POSTAL SERVICES

Parcels (paczki) could be sent as either as normal or
as insured parcels and with the additional services
which were also used for normal letter mail, like proof
of delivery, express, airmail, poste-restante, COD, and
delivery for dispatch outside of the normal opening
hours of the Post Office. The fees for these services
were paid in cash by the sender together with the
postage fee. Postage due was raised at the receiving
post office for additional services upon arrival. These
dues had to be paid by the recipient.

1 April 1931. Parcel card for a 4,6 kg parcel sent from Danzig to
Tarnopol with a Polski Urząd Pocztowy GDAŃSK 1 label for parcels.
For a parcel up to 5kg with a distance more than 600 km 3 złoty had
to be paid, which were paid in cash by the sender. For delivery by
horse carriage (DOR. ZAPRZĘGIEM) 40 groszy postage due was
raised, to be paid by the recipient. Postage due stamps with a total
value of 40 groszy, postmarked TARNOPOL 3b 7 April 1931, on the
reverse.

5 December 1938. A card for a 1,5 kg COD parcel with a value of 46,50 złoty, sent from Danzig to Gdynia with a very rare GDAŃSK 1 s cds and a
Polski Urząd P.-T. Gdańsk 1 (147) parcel label. 70 groszy postage had to be paid for a parcel up to 3 kg with a distance up to 100 km and for COD 50
groszy was added, which were paid in cash by the sender. For delivery 30 groszy postage due was raised, to be paid by the recipient. Postage due
stamps with a total value of 30 groszy, postmarked GDYNIA 1 6.12.38, on the reverse. Single-line ZAPŁACONE (paid) of the Gdynia Post Office on
the front. Parcel labels printed starting from March 1931 the show the number 147 of the zone the Gdańsk 1 Post Office was located in. The fees for
parcel post depended on the distance between the zone of posting and the zone of receipt.
