5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.2.3 DOMESTIC MAIL – OFFICIAL MAIL

From the outset one of the main functions of the Polish Post in the Free City of Danzig was the exchange of official mail between Polish officials in
the Free City and in Poland. The most important Polish offices in the Free City were the offices of the Polish Diplomatic Representative (Komisarz
Generalny), which had several departments, the Polish Railways Management Office (Dyrekcja PKP), the Polish Customs Office (Polski
Inspektorat Celny) and the Polish Post Management Office (Dyrekcja Poczty Polskiej).

From 1 July 1923 until 31 August 1928 the
OPŁATA RYCZAŁTOWANA-system was
used for official mail. A fixed sum had to be
paid for all official mail sent during a given
period based on the amount of mail sent in the
previous period. All such mail was to be
marked with an Opłata ryczałtowana
handstamp indicating the system and the
paragraph and the date of the publication of
the regulation.

6 November 1926. Registered official mail
from the Polish Railways Management Office
in the Free City sent to Kraków with a boxed
Opłata ryczałtowa handstamp. KRAKÓW 1
3e arrival cds.

21 March 1928. The only recorded official letter from the Polish Telegraph Agency (PAT) at the office of the Polish Diplomatic
Representative in Danzig sent registered to Gdynia with a three-line Opłata ryczałtowana handstamp. GDYNIA a arrival cds 22 March
