5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.2.3 DOMESTIC MAIL – OFFICIAL MAIL

On 1 August 1933 special
stamps were issued in Poland
for use on official mail. For
normal official mail a reduced
rate of 1 grosz had to be paid,
for registered official mail 2
groszy. There were two
different types of stamps:
ZWYCZAJNA for normal mail
and POLECONA for registered
mail. No special official stamps
were issued for the Polish Post
in Danzig. Therefore the normal
Polish official stamps had to be
used.

25 September 1933. Registered letter from the Polish diplomatic representative in the Free City of Danzig sent to
Chojnice with the official stamp for registered mail. CHOJNICE 1 arrival cds 26 September 1933 on the reverse.

Between 1935 and 1939 the
Polish consulates in
Königsberg and Marienwerder occasionally sent
official mail by courier to the
Polish Post Office in Danzig
where it was added to the
other official mail for Poland.
Probably this was done to
avoid control by the German
authorities.

14 February 1935. Normal,
not registered letter from the
Polish consulate in
Marienwerder to Tczew sent
through the Polish Post in
Danzig with the official
stamp for normal mail.
