5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.1.3 DOMESTIC MAIL – FINANCIAL SERVICES

The main post office also provided different financial services to its customers. Part of these financial services was directly connected to the postal
operations, like postal money orders, postal encashment orders and mail with cash on delivery (COD). Another part was not directly connected to
postal services and included, among others, sales of lottery tickets, revenue stamps and charity labels. Furthermore the Post Offices and Post
Agencies provided different services for the Postal Savings Bank (Pocztowa Kasa Oszczędności – P.K.O.)

Postal money orders
(przekaz pocztowy)
were used to send
amounts of money
through the Post to the
address of the recipient.
The fee for a postal
money order had to be
paid in cash at the
moment of posting. The
sender received a proof
of posting with an
imprint of the datestamp and signed by the
postal employee.

25 August 1937. Proof of posting for a postal money order of 12,75 złoty. 20 groszy fee had to be paid in cash for a postal
money order up to 20 złoty.

25 July 1936. Proof of posting for a postal money order of 43 złoty. 40 groszy fee had to be paid in cash for a postal
money order between 20 and 50 złoty.

Clearing money orders (pocztowy przekaz
rozrachunkowy) were used only by editors of
magazines and periodicals. A person could
use a clearing money order to pay for a
subscription for a magazine or an
advertisement in a magazine. The fee for
sending money through a clearing money
order was not paid by the sender but by the
receiving editor.

7 July 1930. Proof of
payment for a postal
money order of 20 złoty
and 10 groszy.

31 December 1938. Proof of payment for a magazine subscription through
a clearing money order. The payment fee was paid by the recipient, 10
groszy extra postage had to be paid by the sender for a message on the
back. Two 5 groszy stamps of the 1938 Port Gdańsk issue with a POLSKI
URZĄD P.-T. GDAŃSK 1 n cds.
