5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.3 FOREIGN MAIL

Although officially not allowed,
some correspondence for foreign
countries was sent directly through
the Polish Post in the Free City.
Probably this mail went through
Poland as well because the Polish
Post in Danzig did not have a direct
connection with countries abroad for
sending individual letter mail.

11 January 1935. Letter from Polish
Post Office Gdańsk No 1 sent to
Germany through the Polish Post in
the Free City. The envelope was
endorsed that postage due was
payable by the addressee.
Accordingly, in Germany 50 pfennig
postage due (NACHGEBÜHR) was
raised.

29 July 1929. Picture postcard sent to
Hamburg in Germany through Polish Post
Office Gdańsk No 1. The card was normally
forwarded to Germany, probably because it
had no sender’s address and for that reason
could not be returned to sender. With 20
groszy the card was correctly franked for a
picture postcard to Germany according to the
postal rates valid in Poland. Two Polish stamps
without PORT GDAŃSK overprint.
