5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.3 FOREIGN MAIL

Normally all foreign mail
going to the Free City was
handled only by the Free
City Post. It was possible,
however, that mail from
foreign countries was
handled by the Polish Post in
the Free City when it was
forwarded from Poland.
Such mail, although coming
from abroad, was considered as domestic mail.

28 April 1926. Letter from
Chemnitz to Warszawa
which was forwarded to
Danzig because the
addressee had moved. The
Polish Post in Danzig could
not find the addressee
(written annotation on the
reverse) and the letter was
handed over to the Free City
Post. The cancels Ausruf
erfolglos and Empfänger
nicht zu ermitteln (on the
reverse) show that the Free
City Post could not find him
either, so the letter was
returned to Chemnitz. 25
pfennig for the letter and 30
pfennig for registration.
