Beaches on the Bay of Danzig
Until the outbreak of war in September 01’ 1939, I)aniig’s bathing beaches and spas were heavily attended. People flocked from all over Germany to enjoy the sun and clear waters. The Soviets did nothing to improve the quality of the environment during their tenure. In fact, the waler quality is still recovering from their heavy-handed disregard for cleanliness that was once the hallmark of these beaches.

Where else could the population of such a large area enjoy the natural beauty of such beaches with only a short trolley or boat ride from the center of the city? Bröscn was just a short hike from Ncufahrwasser. with Glettkau only a few miles up the coast. Zoppot may have drawn more sophisticated celebrants by train and automobile: the casino was a major draw there, and the Grand Hotel provided 4-star accomodations with a tine restaurant and dancing under the stars. A half-mile away. full-scale operas were performed at the theatre in the woods

In August. 1999. we visited each of these former landmarks to take photographs of the way they look today.
