Our good friend Gerhard SchUler has, in his Feb. 1980 Rundschreiben Nr. 104, a complete list of plate varieties of the first air issues: 50 thru 52. This thorough study greatly expands our findings which were first published in the Specialist (September ‘79) and in the Danzig Report No. 24. Perhaps the next step is to develop comprehensive illustrations of every variety and publish them in some future issue. We’re sure that Herr Schüler will grant us permission to utilize his findings. They certainly represent years of effort and are greatly appreciated by all of us who collect these stamps. If any of you have varieties of these stamps, please copy them and send us a detail of the area affected by the error so they can be factored into our study. As you well know, some errors or plate defects have slight differences as the press runs wear the plate. For instance, a broken wing tip may show only as a crack on some stamps, while the same plate position from a later run will show a 1 or 2 mm break. From what we understand from the Schüler article, his 3 sheets and Bud Hennig’s 2 sheets of No. 51 are the only complete sheets available for study.

This issue will be a potpourri or zusammenmischen of articles and questions sent in by various members. Last issue ran out of space, so they are included now.

It’s a good thing that we have experts such as John Whiteside to keep the Editor straight on cancels. In our last issue, we showed excerpts from the 1979 book Danzig... 1793-1955 - Bewertung der Poststempel. How ever, there is a companion book, Danzig... 192O-1939 1 Auflage 1977, which is necessary to complement the 1979 edition for a complete listing of cancels.
