ESSAYS AND PROOFS OF THE 1924 AIR POST ISSUE

By B. Hennig

On June 25, 1924, Danzig issued its first Air Post Issue subsequent to the disastrous inflation. The issue depicted an airplane over a stylized profile of the City of Danzig. It contained five values, 10, 20, 40 Pfg., 1 Gulden in the small design and a 2 1/2 Gulden in the large design. The basic printing method of this set, contrary to one’s estimates, was no different than the original method of printing stamps by the early issues of the State of Danzig; that is. four dies were prepared, impressions were made from the dies in black; these black proofs were then pasted on preperforated cardboard, retouched in white and India ink from which the final plate of 100 and 50 respectively, were completed. Before it was decided that the 2 1/2 Gulden should be prepared in a large design, a small design was prepared in the same size as the remaining values and such essays were prepared in the same manner as described above.
