Danzig Report No. 17

DANZIG REPORT STUDY and RESEARCH GROUP

Editor: John H. Bloecher Jr., 1743 Little Creek Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21207

TORONTO GPS JUNE 15, 16, 17 & 18:
The above dates are correct, and please note that the Oktoberfest dinner will be held on the evening of Thursday, June 15. However, reservations are extremely difficult to secure, due to many arrivals from Europe. In spite of this difficulty, it will be worth the effort to attend. We know that there will be plenty of good Danzig material for sale.

The mail sale in the last Report resulted in 5 purchases from 3 different members. We agree that prices of most of the British-supplied material is astronomical compared to those of a couple of years ago, but the British pound is at $ 1.9554 compared to $ 1.7073 a year ago, and these rates are prime selling prices in NY for bank transfers. In other words, expect to pay about $ 2 a pound, plus postage. Keep an eye on the U.S. auctions if you don’t like paying up to Michel + 30%. If the same (or similar) material is offered in consecutive auctions within a short time span, there’s a good chance that prices will moderate the second time around. Something like that happened in Koerber’s February auction, when the Danzig material sold for apparent bargains. The Mi. 53 variety of the 5 pfg. Cog with black center was estimated at $50 but sold for $15.00. The same item in a top margin copy sold for over $50 last year from a European dealer. The The general pricing trend is definitely on an ascending course (we have been advised to forget the ceiling prices in the ‘78 Michel specialized), but bargains will pop up from time to time. We’ll include another mail sale soon.

20 P Einl. Geb. will probably be resolved in the next Report. With the great help of Dr. Bohne and Col. Halle, we have secured the original manuscripts of 3 different sources describing the 20 pfg. postal charge. Since accuracy at this stage is most important, we will ask them to determine which regulations were in effect at various times in Danzig. Have any of you found this handstamp on your covers?
