1831 “Cholera’ Counterfeits Reported


A source in western Europe has discovered that falsification of the old (1831) fumigated covers with Danzig markings are coming on the market and that all of our members should be made aware of the problem. Danzig Report #60 illustrates several of Bud Hennig’s “real’ covers for comparison. Our source said that especially vulnerable are the covers with hand-written cancellations in pale red ink, written: de Dantzig or a Danzig or Dantzig. (See Hasseihof cancel book, part II, page 20.) The same caution applies to the CHOLERA letters, with the various cancellations in red and black. This mainly applies to the cover page, or letters without contents or date. However, complete letters are available to the counterfeiter, so we must be careful of these as well. Expertization appears necessary in any future purchase of disinfected covers.

Below: A folded letter from late August, 1831. Total size of gray-green watermarked paper is approximately I 6’/,”x 13-7/16”, which folds into 8-114” x 13-7/16”, then four more folds to complete the final letter size of 3-3/8” x 6-3/4”. This letter was acquired years before the current round of forgeries.
