Studies of the Original Cliches
On the next two pages are proofs made from the five incomplete plates described on Page 1. A key is shown below in order to identify the various cuts on Page 3. Stamp B depicts the Georgshalle (In Polish: Dw6r Bractwa w.Jerzego = St.Georges Hall), Michel 258. Cuts C and D are of the Mercury statue (Mi. 277) that adorns the small guard house structure that sits to the left of the Artushof entrance. The only visible difference between the line of cuts C and D, is the damage done to the swastikas in line D. Someone was offended by their presence and used a convex object to smash the Nazi symbols. They’re still visible in line C. Outside of this damage, there isn’t a single plate anomaly that shows in any of the examples.
The vertical strip of air mail cliches at E is unknown, either 254 or 301, depending upon the watermark and gum rippling.
On Page 5, forty cliche positions of Mi. 276 are printed in a 5 x 8 block.
For details of margin markings for both letterpress and offset type printing, refer to Diana Manchester’s excellent study in the Feb/March 1990 German Postal Specialist.
