5 THE MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

5.4 LOCAL MAIL

Officially, mail within the Free City could be sent only through the Free City Post. For this reason, the Polish Post Office in Danzig had to send
notifications of arrival of mail or money transfers for recipients outside of the delivery area of the Polish Post through the Free City Post.

8 January 1930. Free City postal
stationery card sent by Polish Post
Office Gdańsk No 1 through the Free
City Post to Zoppot. On the reverse a
POLSKI URZĄD P.-T. No 1 GDAŃSK n
cds and two handstamps, one in Polish
and one in German, informing that a
cheque could be collected within 14
days at the post office.

All local mail addressed to the Polish
Post in Danzig had to be sent through
the Free City Post as well in spite of the
recipient being the Polish Post.

13 May 1935. Free City postal stationery
card sent through the Free City post
from Zoppot to “Gdańsk – Polish Post –
Poste restante”. For the poste restante
service the Polish Post in Danzig raised
10 groszy postage due with a Polish
stamp, made invalid with a POLSKI
URZĄD P.-T. GDAŃSK 1 s cds 14 May
1935. The only recorded item sent
through the Free City with postage due
raised at the Polish Post in Danzig.
