Danzig has also aï:ays been a city of interesting buildangs.Iany Ren aiisance and Baroque buildings have been reconstructed after the almost total destruction of war. Between the wars the ancient ‘1’arienkirche’ stood out as a massive landmark visible for miles from the top of whose to er could be seen the many spires of Danzig silhouetted against the sky arid the wide curve of the coastline leading to the resorts of Zopot, Glettkau, Brösen and Heubude.

Interesting too, was and still is, the much illustrated ‘Krantor’ or ‘Crane Gate’ on the Nottlau canal waterfront.This was the largest port elevator on..the Baltic during the 1iddle Ages. A building so reminis— cer.tof the Hanseatic merchants that one could easily imaginea ‘Kogge’, one of the ships that were once the rulers of the Baltic and guardians of Danzig’s trade on the high seas.

Other buildings of note included the nearby tall otservatory from which Johann Hevelius watched the Heavens, and the ‘Rathaus’ or ‘City Ha]l’ whose elegant spire doninated the busy ‘Langemart’. From there it was a short step towards the ‘Hohe Tor’ or ‘High Gate’ , fornerly the main entrance to the walled town.
