The econory of post—war Gdañsk province, now part of North Central Poland relied upon the 3-port complex of Gdañsk city, Gdyria and Sopot which handled some 5O% of Poland’s shipping, and still plays a major part as one of several large ports on the Baltic coast.

Besides its great shipbuilding and trading importance, Danzig has over the ages laid other claims to fame. There, have been born the writer Johann Daniel Falk, the painter and poet Robert Rennick,the scientist Fahrenheit and the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer.
