NEPTUNE’S FOUNTAIN; where are the Eagles?
EAGLES are missing in the unaddressed ham radio operator’s card, and the date of the card is disputable. It says “Visit beautiful DANZIG”, is overprinted with a purple stamp “Swieto Morza” advertising the Festival of the Sea (dated 29.6.45!), and has a Polish stamp with 28.6.45 postmark on the back. We assume that the card was printed before the war, and it shows no eagles or fancy gates as seen here and in the photo in our Report No. 40, Page 2, of gates only. During our trip to Gdansk, we purchased the picture card at the bottom, sporting its eagle. The inset photo is from a 1965 book showing the revival of the city from the ashes of 1945, and the Polish author made a stron point in the installation. Opposite: Our view in Sept. ‘88: no fancy gates or eagle.
