Danzig’s position has caused her to be a commercial centre. The arm of the river Vistula known as the ,,Tote Weichsel” Dead Vistula, and its tributaries, form an excellent harbour for the traffic of deep sea-going ships. From time immemorable the strength of the City has been its harbour: it led in Hanseatic days to the highest prosperity of the City and it offers unlimited possibilities for further development of transport and industrial undertakings. The Danzig ship-building yards have already gained world fame: ships have been launched from small steamers up to Ocean-liners of the largest dimensions.

Danzig offers therefore owing to her position be tween the extensive fruitful lowlands and the adjoining highlands. in close vicinity to the coast and bathing resorts, the harbour and its world traffic, the City and its artistic buildings which seem almost to be an open air museLmi. a picture of great attraction.
